Front Porch Portrait Series
Our Strength at Home in 2020

2020 might not have been exactly what anyone expected, but for so many it allowed time to slow down and soak in precious moments with our family. Through my Portland Front Porch Portrait series, documented in May 2020, during the mandated quarantine due to the Covid 19 pandemic, I photographed 15 families that wanted to encapsulate this unprecedented time with family portraits.  Remembering all the beauty in the chaos and to hold memories of strength at home with our nearest and dearest loves.

I’m so excited to share some highlights from the Portland families I had the pleasure of photographing, making the best of a tough year and creating joy together during the lockdown of 2020. These were all photographed by me, with a mask on, all at a proper social distance using longer and telephoto lenses outside on families porches, and yards.Thank you to all the families who chose me to document these bittersweet memories at home and for sharing your personal thoughts about the experience. I’ve included select quotes along with photographs to share this strength in our homes and our families during this hard time. Hugs to you all and stay safe out there!

“I’m writing to tell you I am SO glad to have your photos. I absolutely love love LOVE #28, Sam looking lovingly at smiling Lily & Henry that you rendered in black & white. I know this will be one of the most cherished images I’ll ever have of my children. I’m going to put it into a big beautiful frame. I told my husband it’s one of the things coming to the nursing home with us some day :)” -Dawn Peck
“Jessica photographed our wedding 5 years ago, and when she announced she was doing Porch Portraits , I was thrilled to have her surprise my husband when I had a socially distancing birthday with members of his family. It was the first time we had seen each other in months that was not through a screen. I had also booked the Portland Famous Unipiper as another surprise for his party. She took pictures of us with the Unipiper , with our family in masks and around the outside of our newly purchased home. We are so happy to have professional documentation of a strange, emotional and unique time with someone who makes us comfortable like we are chatting with an old friend.” -Nicole Benoit“In a time when you feel like lots of things are being taken away these photos are a great reminder to appreciate what we do have – a home and our family.” -Patience Deeks “Jessica’s work is phenomenal. She is able to capture the tiniest sparkles–the love contained in each moment! These months have been a rollercoaster of emotions and uncertainty, but contained within have been cherished weeks of getting to spend time with our children and seeing them grow. I felt every drop of that sentiment in our porch photos. We felt safe and seen. When I look at these images, I will remember the best of times and the magic.” -Katherine Berman
“Grateful to have many wonderful pictures of our family, a beautiful memory from a challenging time. This period will shape us as we move forward, and I hope these photos will be a reminder of the comfort that family provides each of us.” -Kellie Gulden“We were so happy to have Jessica come by for these photos. The pandemic disrupted our plans for a photoshoot with our baby in his first year, but we were still able to capture the moment in front of our new home, where we are getting to spend so much time together now. Jessica shot our engagement and wedding photos as well, and it was so nice to have her behind the camera again!” -Jesse Neilson and Giorgina Castillo

“So special! We had recently moved into our home and just got a new puppy so it truly captured this moment in time! The good and the bad.”  -Merrin Permut

Baby Sheils
A Lewis and Clark Maternity

Ahhh! I couldn’t be happier for this wonderful family! After photographing Elizabeth and Tim’s amazing engagement & wedding several years ago, I was honored to photograph their stylish and joyful maternity session at the historic Lewis and Clark campus. Photographing a family’s milestones in this wonderful life is why I do what I do!  Tim and Elizabeth are just as kind and wonderful as they appear and we had lots of laughs and long the way. Also, can we just mention their adorable pup, Penny? She stole the show with several people stopping us to pet her and give her love! Very excited for them to welcome their baby boy later this month! Eeeeek!

The Roelke Family
A Sauvie Island Family Session

The Roelke and Coddington families all met up at the beautiful Kruger’s farm on Sauvies Island for their family photos! Rachel is a hilarious and wonderful woman, friend, mama and incredible wedding and conference coordinator and I was honored to document her rad family. The grandparents and aunt and uncle joined in the fun while we hung around the farm too! While photographing beneath the gorgeous oak tree there, a miniature horse was walking by with it’s owner and I jumped at the opportunity to photograph little man Everett with the horses. SO COOL. Needless to say I had a blast with this fun, stylish and smart family and I love that they created some awesome custom canvases for their home!  Have you heard the news about the fall mini-sessions? Here’s more info about the family photos in Portland, Bend and Wilsonville this autumn, and I would love to document your family soon!

Kristina and Scott
Oregon Coast Photography

Kristina and Scott along with Kristina’s son Aiden, all met up on an overcast yet calm Sunday morning on the coast, where the family was enjoying a long weekend getaway. This kind couple loves nature, hiking and being outdoors with family. So much so, that they are getting married this month on top of Mt. Hood at Silcox Hut! We explored old growth forests in Ecola State Park and danced on the beach. Kristina braved the chill in a long pretty dress and Aiden did rad ninja kicks for the camera. Thank you Scott and Kristina for choosing me to document these important moments with your family from ocean coast to mountain top!

The Johnson Family
A Day in the Life at Home

Michelle, Alex, Leo and Ray are the cutest and kindest. I met Michelle a loooonnnnngggg time ago when she was at Oblation and of course… wedding industry so we met at a bridal show! After finding out that our home roots are also in Michigan and specifically, Ann Arbor we became friends and I actually photographed Michelle and Alex’s two year wedding anniversary photos long before the kiddos came along! Michelle now co-owns a great book binding company called Hitched Strung Stitched in town. After not seeing her in many moons, we ended up in a magical pre-natal yoga class together at Yoga Pearl! I was so happy and honored to be invited to their new home to photograph their sweet family. Leo is a cutie and such a good big brother to baby Ray! Alex and Michelle are great parents and even grandma and grandpa were able to jump in for a few photos! I love photographing families at home, in the familiar, the cozy and comfortable and gettin real moments rather than staged all too perfect traditional family portraits. The messy hair, the barefeet and the wildness of the days that make up the years that make up this beautiful life. Thank you Johnson family and much love!

White Family Maternity Session
Portland Oregon Maternity Photos

I’ve known Sarah since the 6th grade and consider her to be a best friend to the point of family. We were together for our first loves and at the altar for both of our weddings… I’m beyond excited for her to be expecting her first beautiful baby and… It’s a GIRL! Sarah and Drew are expecting baby Ruthie within the next month and she’s being welcomed to the world by two incredible parents! We photographed around their home in McMinnville and went to Kramer Vineyards to adventure through the vineyards. We ended with a stunning sky and some really magical moments from their maternity session. Love these guys and their daughter to be. artistic-maternity-photos-portland-001 artistic-maternity-photos-portland-002 artistic-maternity-photos-portland-003 artistic-maternity-photos-portland-004 artistic-maternity-photos-portland-005 artistic-maternity-photos-portland-006 artistic-maternity-photos-portland-007 artistic-maternity-photos-portland-008 artistic-maternity-photos-portland-009 artistic-maternity-photos-portland-010 artistic-maternity-photos-portland-011

Alice and Scott’s Maternity Session

Alice, Scott and I have known each other now for over three years now. I first got to know them when they hired me to photograph their wedding in 2011. We had a really amazing time at their engagement session in the Pearl district and then their wedding was beyond glorious at Bridal Veil Lakes. I still have a copy of their wedding album in my studio! When they told me they were expecting, I was so excited and even more so with the idea of photographing their maternity session. I’m not sure about you, but I have some bad memories associated to the typical 1980’s maternity sessions. (i.e. black and white photos and some sarongs and awkward posing. and I been on a mission to change that. I love the idea of going in nature and having it be more of an organic and artistic. I just had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Henry and he’s absolutely perfect! It’s my true happiness to be documenting these life-changing moments for such a kind, loving and down to earth couple and their new family. Life is wonderful.

Baby Gender Reveal Party!

I was so excited to photograph baby Marek’s gender reveal party recently! Many couples cut into a cake and it’s pink inside if it’s a girl, and blue if it’s a boy! I figured that momma-to-be Liz, a professional baker herself, with her own book out on Amazon.com, would have the gender cake of the century! I was quite pleasantly surprised with the vintage hot air balloon theme and the basket pull! Dan and Liz were grinning ear to ear when the pink confetti showered them and everyone pronounced “It’s a Girl!” Baby Avalon is due this summer and her story is a long and miraculous one. I’m so happy for Liz and Dan and baby Avalon and their families! What a wonderful party!

The Farrara Family
Sauvie Island Family Photographer

WOW! I absolutely loved working with this incredible family made up of Eric, Autumn, Jackson and their adorable labradoodle Maggie. We almost cancelled the shoot, as it was raining buckets about an hour before our scheduled shoot. Luckily, the rain passed, the sun came out and Sauvie Island provided some great landscapes. They are expecting an addition soon and I love how sweet Jackson is as a big brother! Congrats Farrara Family!
